Griselda crowned ASEAN Champion

ASEAN Optimist Sailing Championship, 1 to 11 November 2006, Singapore

The ASEAN Optimist Sailing Championship concluded after five days of racing. Four races were held this afternoon in varied conditions with winds of up to 12 knots and strong currents showing early signs of the imminent North East monsoon.

Singapore's Griselda Khng, who led the race from the start, rose to the top finishing first in the Open division. 14 year old Navee Thamsoontom from Thailand managed to overcome the local calamities to bag second place, followed by Singapore's Sean Lee in third place.

"The week's sailing was extremely difficult for both sailors and race officials, the light and shifty conditions made daily racing a gamble. The race officials had the unnerving task of trying to set proper courses in the oscillating wind conditions. Ten points for their efforts. On behalf of SingaporeSailing, we thank all sailors and officials for their involvement in the 2006 ASEAN Optimist Sailing Championship." said Edwin Low, Organising Chairman.

The race officers at the ASEAN Optimist Sailing Championship attempted to start race eight this afternoon after waiting the day for some breeze. Finally at 4.24pm, race eight was started but was abandoned due to the light fluky winds and strong currents.

The sailors take a break tomorrow to soak in the sights of Sentosa. A day tour has been arranged by race sponsor Sentosa where the participants will visit the fun and exciting attractions on the island.

Griselda Maintains Lead

The second day of the 2006 ASEAN Optimist Sailing Championship started with light winds ranging from five to eight knots. An amendment was made to the sailing instructions to include a gate system at the leeward mark so as to ease congestion. The sailing conditions were much improved today as there were less tidal effects.

Ten year old Nicodemus Tan led race four from the start to the finish making this his first win ever. Following close behind is Thailand’s Navee Thamsoontom in second place and in third place was Singapore’s Rachel Lee.

Race five began perfectly as Singapore’s Griselda Khng, Asian Optimist Girl Champion, led the fleet to end the race in first position. Hot on her heels was her fellow teammate Sean Lee who won the North American and Asian Optimist Championships earlier in the year. Thirteen year old Russell Kan finished close in third place with less than one boat length away from Sean.

The first and second positions were switched between Griselda and Sean in race six. Singapore’s Muhammed Audi finished in third place.

In the last race of the day, the shifty wind conditions were the reasons for the shortened course. Thailand’s Navee Thamsoontom came in first followed by Japan’s Yuri Kashiwabara in second and Malaysia’s Khairunnisa Binte Mohd Afendy in third.

Griselda Leads

ASEAN Optimist Sailing Championship, 1 to 11 November 2006, Singapore

Fifty sailors sailed off SingaporeSailing’s National Sailing Centre for the first three races of the 2006 ASEAN Optimist Sailing Championship held in Singapore. Light winds from the pre North-East monsoon dominated the day ranged from five to eight knots.

Leading the regatta after three races is 15 year-old Griselda Khng (SIN) followed by Russell Kan (SIN) who fought a close battle with New Zealand’s Brad Moss to take first place in the second race. Brandan Ong (MAS) scored 10,5,5 and is now in third place.

"The current positions can easily change as the regatta falls within the inter-monsoon period which makes conditions unpredictable. The sailors can expect fluctuating winds in the coming days. This would make the regatta a challenging one, it can still be anyone’s chance to win the regatta,” said Edwin Low, Organising Chairman and Secretary-General of the Singapore Sailing Federation.
